ABOUT US
We have a small herd of Dexter cattle. Kenny grows the oat hay and Pennie raises the animals. Kenny's grandfather showed him how to grow oat hay when he was in high school. His grandfather dry farmed with horses in the Fallbrook and Hemet areas of Southern California.
We have 5 kids. All of them did 4-H. They raised everything. We got our first Dexter for our daughter in 2015 from Mooster Meadows. Java, our first Dexter heifer, was shown in several shows by our daughter. Dexters are smaller and more docile, making them easier to handle than larger breeds. It built up her confidence to show large market beef at our local fair. After tasting the different types of beef breeds we have discovered that Dexter meat tastes MUCH BETTER than the show steers our children raised. For those reasons we have kept our own Dexter cattle herd for our beef supply and for others who are interested in raising their own Dexter cattle.
A lot of Dexter raisers, including us, keep the bull calves intact and butcher them when they are about 14 months old. The costs are low with no castration involved and they are kept and fed for a short period of time. The hormones build up muscle on the calves. As opposed to the cost of castration and feeding the animal for a few months to a year longer with only a couple of hundred pounds of extra weight on them. The cows are bred yearly, so this keeps the cattle numbers on the property stable.
All our Dexters are registered with the American Dexter Cattle Association.
